Cat Island is also home to the highest point
in the Bahamas. Mount Alvernia is just 206 feet above sea level, but a
10-minute hike to the summit offers 360-degree panoramic views of the entire
island. Monsignor John Hawes, a Roman Catholic priest, built a small monastery
on Mount Alvernia in 1939 called The Hermitage, although no longer used by
clergymen.
Cat Island is named after the pirate Arthur
Catt (a herd of predatory cats that do not have wild) and is close to the
Tropic of Cancer between Eluthera and Long Island. It has one of the most
pleasant climates in the country, with temperatures as high as 60 degrees
(below) 20 degrees Celsius. It is also home to approximately 2,000 people, some
of whom are the friendliest people in the Bahamas. Many local historians claim
that the residents of Cat Island were the first to see Columbus. Some people
believe that the peaceful Arawaks greeted the traveler here. Whether Columbus
stays here or not, the island has a rich history of adventurers, slaves,
pirates, and farmers.
